More about kitty [Oct. 1st, 2007|08:30 pm]
[Current Mood |draineddrained]

There is nothing else much right now. When I took him to his appointment they decided to keep him and watch him because his kidney numbers were so bad and they said they were going to give him IV fluids.

We picked him up from the vet tonight around 7pm. He was so hostile and feisty that they were unable to give him IV fluids and had to inject them under his skin instead. Anyhow, his kidney numbers were WAY better, although still double normal levels. They were like 50 times normal levels on Saturday.

That means I have to take him to get injected with fluids tomorrow night. There is no way of knowing how damaged his kidneys are, what caused this, or if it is chronic or just a one time issue. Once we get his numbers back to normal, he has to be tested weekly, be on a special diet for awhile, and be watched. We are just hoping he makes a full recovery.

There is no evidence that the food was the issue at all. In fact, it's most likely that a petal fell off of one of my stargazer lilies that Craig got me for an anniversary gift and he licked it. All lilies are very toxic to cats. I didn't know that. :(

Well, it seems to be under control now....

Cats are surprisingly delicate and yet surprisingly resilliant.

My fingers are still crossed for you.

I'm glad at least the test numbers are going in the right direction. I'm just hoping he tests as "normal" so we know his kidneys are filtering like they should be. Then we just have to watch him to make sure they stay good. Thanks for the good wishes.

Sub-q fluids are almost as good as direct IV. So that's fine.
I'm glad his numbers are looking better!
Keeping you guys in our thoughts!

I can't help, but wanted you to know that the cat who is currently residing quite healthily on the foot of my bed did this same thing. They were sure he was going to die, and then he got better and he's completely fine now. He was also eating a plant my roommate had no idea would poison him and in the end, he did get better. I'll cross my fingers for you.

thoughts and prayers with kitty and you.

male cats easily get their urinary tracts blocked. crystals form and block up, and they get kidney damage.

my kittes are all on the special low magnesium diet which helps prevent this, because JuJu (my oldest cat) was hospitalized and almost died from this.

good luck!
