I made a big stock pot full of chicken and vegetable soup, using the carcass left over from tea, which was very nice. Sean's a good cook! Now we'll have soup for days. (:

Cats don't like Flagyl [Jul. 6th, 2008|12:38 am]

morghon
My cat, Bubbles, is sick. She has some sort of bacterial overgrowth in her gut so I have to give her Flagyl twice a day. I have taken Flagyl myself and there is nothing in the world that tastes so foul, with the possible exception of hydrogen peroxide.

Bubbles just put up quite a fight and even though I managed to get the stuff into her it didn't end there. She is now foaming at the mouth but she is too angry with me to let me clean her up. I mentioned the foaming to the vet and his response was "Yeah, it tastes really bad." So I guess foaming is par for the course. Tonight she managed to draw blood from both my hand and my leg so I think her strength is returning. Yay, I think. Ouch.

Birthday etc. [Jul. 6th, 2008|12:01 am]

morghon
Yesterday was my birthday but festivities started on Thursday when Clamboy and Desolina took me out for a spectacular grown up evening. First they took me to see a cabaret at the Triple Door and then to the loveliest dinner I have had in years at El Gaucho. I had forgotten what it is like to eat in an excellent restaurant without a small child hanging on my neck (often literally). The French Onion Soup was the best I have ever had in a restaurant and my steak was fantastic as well as huge, I am still enjoying it. It was a great evening and I feel like they really spoiled me rotten. Thanks to you both!

Since my actual Birthday coincides with a national holiday I decided to keep it small. I invited a few friends over and most of them said they couldn't make it so I was only expecting Brian and one or two others but at the last minute people who said they couldn't make it called to ask if they could still come. So we ended up with 6 adults and Alice. I spent the early part of the day cleaning the house and grill and making my birthday cake with Alice. Then while the cake cooled we went to pick Brian up. He played with Alice while I finished up the cake and preparations.

Dinner was kind of weird because I had assumed the meat eaters would prefer steak kababs and had only bought one pound of ground beef in case Alice wanted a burger instead. I had not purchased buns because I had some frozen ones and didn't think we'd need them anyway. Well, everyone wanted burgers except Alice who ate corn and a hotdog. The buns were not great. I had the kabob and it was really good! I grilled corn too. One guest brought a nice salad so we had that too.

The cake was a dark chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and chocolate chips sprinkled on top. This was the first time I tried this frosting and I found it nauseatingly sweet but it looked pretty with all its candles blazing. I think I am just too old for frosting.

After cake everyone except Brian and my friend Lisa left. Then we headed down into Fremont to watch the fireworks on Lake Union. Alice decided it was a race so she and Brian ran ahead of Lisa and me. We didn't know the game so we kept trying to keep up. Finally Brian clued me in and were able to continue at a more reasonable pace. We got a great spot right under the Aurora bridge. At first we were surprised to see this spot unoccupied but after we settled into it we realized that our neighbors were some serious partyers and this was almost certainly the reason for the vacancy. We were not scared away though and the partyers did not cause any trouble.

I think this was probably the best fireworks display I have ever seen. It was quite something and Alice is finally old enough that she really appreciated it and wasn't scared.

We had a nice walk back along the Burke Gilman and then Brian helped get Alice to bed. Lisa ended up giving Brian a ride home so they left shortly after Alice went to bed.

It was a pretty decent birthday.

This morning the doorbell rang and there was a delivery guy with this big fruit bouquet from my parents. My mother had seen it on TV and decided it would be fun to try. It would have been good to have before the party but there was no way Alice and I could eat this thing. It is huge, like the centerpiece of a wedding reception buffet. So I called around and did manage to get my friend Hugh to come over and eat some fruit. By massively rearranging things in the fridge and removing a shelf I was able to get it wedged inside so maybe we can eat half of it before it goes bad. It is very pretty and the chocolate dipped strawberries were delicious.

Today I took Alice over to Ballard to see Bicycle Bob, where she got her first bike. It is a pretty silver, pink and purple 16 inch with training wheels. We took it over to Salmon Bay school and she rode it around the playground until dinner time. She did fall off a few times but she got right back on with no complaints and didn't even notice she had scraped her knee until we got home. I'm terribly proud of her!

Had a very good day. Much more active than normal, which is why I am tired and about to fall asleep.  Got up and went out to breakfast with the brood, then took the dogs to the dog park for a nice long play session. I was surprised at how many dogs were there in the middle of the day. We stayed for nearly an hour and a half, and Kota was running amok the entire time.  Then I rode my bicycle the couple miles to Walmart to do some light shopping.  When I got home from that, my paycheck had finally appeared, so I walked the dogs over to the bank to deposit it.  I thought I would have to pick Cosmo up and carry him on the way back; poor puppy was wiped out! But he made it.  Walking already tired dogs on a leash is very easy :)

Then went out to dinner with everyone in the house (ugh, including the idiot housemate).  Played some rummy and now I'm ready to fall into bed! Pleasantly exhausted.  The dogs should sleep like rocks tonight, too. Wore their little asses out!

So a very good day, even though the slight chance I had to see Big D didn't pan out.

People who really piss me off [Jul. 5th, 2008|10:03 pm]

[Current Mood | cranky]

People That Annoy Me

-People that cannot keep their mouth shut. If I tell you something or ask you to keep your mouth shut, then I am going to be pissed when you go and talk about it to someone else. And I won’t forget about it either. I will give you a second chance but after that you will never be allowed into the trusted zone again. You want to be close to me? Then respect my privacy and we are all good.
-People that feel the need to be snippy for no reason.
-People who are always right in their little world and cannot ever say “dude, I am sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you by doing something you asked me not to do. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong, but you do, and I am sorry.” Instead they want to sit there and have drama for ten months because that is better and it will probably ruin any chances of a future relationship. Yeah, you messed up, why can’t you just apologize and drop the drama?
-People who are fake. With me, you see what you get. I am who I am, if I act like I like you, then I guarantee you that I do. If I act like I don’t like you, then there is a chance I am coming off wrong, but there is also a chance that I don’t like you. Chances are though that you will hear from me sooner or later that I like you if I do, so there is no guesswork there. I don’t blame games and I don’t leave you wondering. People might think I am abrasive and I very well might be, but at least I am REAL.
-People who obviously think they are better than you are, so they constantly put you down in small ways and speak to you condescendingly. If you act like you think you are better than me, it is probably because secretly you have security issues and don’t think much of yourself, so don’t lay your issues on me.
-People who are lazy. There is plenty of time to sit down and relax if you just get crap done first.
-People who play the victim and act like everyone owes them something. Life hasn’t always been fair to me, but in the end I get over it and realize that I have it a lot better than many people so I get down on my knees and thank the Lord above that I am still here and alive and so is my family.
-Last but not least, people who insist on drawing other people into their drama. I heard a really good line in a song once, it said “check your baggage at the door”. And I like that a lot. I have drama in my life for sure, but if I have an issue with it, I don’t go around acting like a little spoiled brat and say “oh, well, I don’t want to be around so-and-so, you have to spend time with just me” or “you would not believe what she/he did, let me tell you about it first so that person can look really bad and I can come out smelling like roses”. If you and I have issues, they are our issues and no one else’s, so do us all a favor and check your baggage at the door.

I know, I am probably a total bitch, but…whatever. I am over it.

To end on a positive note: I am glad that because of my surgery I cannot drink much alcohol. I got to see first-hand what my future would have been and I didn’t like it too much. I know that I could not have controlled myself, so I am glad that option is taken away now. That doesn’t sound too positive I am sure, but believe me, it is.

Anyone ever hear of something called auditory integration training?

It sounds like something that might help the boychild with his language acquisition/auditory processing problems.

Anyway, we've got a ten-day appointment (two sessions per day, 30 minutes each) with a local therapist coming up in August. So, um, yeah. We'll see.

Also must find: occupational/sensory integration therapist type person, preferably not in the back of beyond. (Why are they ALL in the freaking suburbs? Seriously, it's annoying.)

1. I'm so ready to have this surgery. I can't wait. I get scared because I go through Obesity Help's memorials section and check the reasons for people dying, and they don't die on the slab. Most die from cancer or heart-related problems, and that makes me feel better, in a sort-of sick way.

2. I don't feel ready to march a parade, but I'm determined to do it. I'm going to carry water in a mile-long parade next weekend. The thing is, I'm certain I can walk a mile, but I don't know if I can keep up the pace. I'll be so embarrassed if I fall behind. I mean, it's a parade for crying out loud. So I'll just have to give it a go.

3. Which reminds me, I'm starting to work out again. I'll be going back this week after a sunburn hiatus. I'm starting to feel fat and miserable, even though I'm a little leaner now.

4. I'm happy to be in touch with my old friend again.

5. We have so much stuff to pay back, and thank goodness for my SSDI backpay, but it didn't go too far. $2000 to family for $8000 worth of back rent (when we were both sick and couldn't work); $1000 to the psychiatrist; $2000 to medical bills, and $1000 to credit cards. I just got a statement from a collection agency and found that we've got a ton left in medical bills. It feels like we're not even making a dent, even though we've been diligently paying things off for the past two years. Well, now that I've got an income too, we can work on paying off even more. *sigh* Well, we're making progress.

6. And I desperately want to move out. I WANT OUR OWN PLACE.

Sigh.

Took a break, and saw Wall-E. YOU. MUST. SEE. THIS. MOVIE.

It's quite possibly the best movie I've seen come from Pixar, if not the best animated movie I've ever seen, including Miazakyi.

I wasn't the only person sobbing at the end -- I could hear at least one woman behind me sobbing when I did. I will warn you, bring tissues. You will need them, unless the grinch's heart is warmer than your own.

Home Sweet Home [Jul. 5th, 2008|08:47 pm]

rosenstpaul
I have been home all day and it is driving me nuts. Don't get me wrong, I love my house but I am just not a home body.

Stella and I did venture out for about an hour today and it was a very rough hour. First we went to Walmart and she had a tantrum because I wouldn't buy her any gum. She fell out. She was on the ground on her stomach kicking and screaming. That was a treat. We then went to Bath and Body works so I could get some Shea Butter for my new tattoo. She did ok in there, but before that we stopped into the Carter's store where she had a fit in there too because she couldn't play with the toys. We when came home and she was just a little stinker. I love my daughter, but she is naughty and she had an attitude, yes an attitude at 19 months oh and she also has a temper like her dad. So needless to say I was at my wits end today. My parents came over for a bit so that was a nice little break.

I guess I never realized how hard it is to be with her all day. I guess I take my alone time for granted. Yes I am usually with her all day on the weekends, but Don usually gives me a break so I can go run errands or meet my girlfriends for lunch or whatever, but he hasn't been able to lately. Don is expanding our deck and has been working on it pretty much every single day. I told him how much I now appreciate the time he does give me.

Also I noticed when I am home all day, I eat more. Usually, on the weekends I eat my three meals a day and maybe a snack, but I am usually out and about all weekend. I noticed today that I have been snacking all day long and I don't like it. I eat when I am bored, so I guess I have been bored all day. I need to get out of the house tomorrow so I don't to this again tomorrow.

Have remained indoors for the better part of two weeks, due to my headcold, plus the fact that it has been absolutely crapping itself here (wind, rain, hail, snow, sleet) weather-wise apart from the occasional 3-4 day stretch of patchy sun, etc.

The first Social Skills Group for people on the autistic spectrum was held on Friday from 5.30 pm until 7 pm. Will be interested to see how it develops. Runs for 6-7 weeks, with the possibility of it being developed into a more regular on-going programme if the introduction of this one proves fruitful.

Cancelled my plans for the weekend (party Saturday night, Zen meditation retreat in Waitati Sunday morning), spent most of it watching tv with Sean and reading Escape from Bosnia, Aza's Story as told to Sue McCauley. The fascinating true story of Brent, a young New Zealand pilot who falls in love with Aza, a beautiful local woman whilst serving as a UN observer in war-torn Bosnia.

Appointments, classes and the usual outings lined up this week. Let's hope that the sun will come out and stay a little longer before too long ...

Screen aspect ratios as musical notes [Jul. 5th, 2008|04:00 pm]

reenigne
[Tags|, ]

Aspect ratios of televisions and computer monitors tend to be ratios of small integers. On my desk right now I have 3 monitors that are 4:3 and one that is 8:5.

Another thing involving ratios of small integers is musical intervals in Just Intonation.

C 1:1
C# 16:15
D 9:8
D# 6:5
E 5:4 5:4 monitors exist but are not common
F 4:3 the most common non-widescreen aspect ratio
G 3:2 3:2 monitors exist but are not common
G# 8:5 the most common computer widescreen format
A 5:3 5:3 monitors exist but are not common
A# 16:9 HDTV format
B 15:8
