Free Makeup and Lotions=What a joke [Jan. 21st, 2009|10:00 am]

Like I'm waiting over 2 hours in line for not even picking a product you like? They just hand out a random product.

Here's an exercise in Sociology. Compare those in the line with those shopping for shoes and buying makeup in the Nordstrom. Here's what I've figured out from this.

In the next 3 weeks you'll be able to buy any product on the list on Ebay for 1/5th or less it's actual cost without waiting in line. So few of them were even WEARING makeup. They line up in a totally foreign environment with the lure of "free". These aren't the ladies who go up to the Dior counter to buy a fancy lipstick when it isn't "free gift time". These are the ladies who've figured out how many "free gifts" they can get at different stores so that they can sell them online. These are people from the swap meet, not those who bought the overpriced items in the first place.

Ladies of luxury who buy these products want to feel good and special and they are paying for an "experience" part of which is to be pampered and not wait. They pay a premium to not be exposed to the unwashed masses. That is why they were able to price fix so easily. Few of them are actually IN the line, so it's more like a Robin Hood project and I hope some of the ladies used to getting by with Equate lotion now use their hard earned lotion and enjoy it after waiting so long in line rather than selling the time they waited in line for too cheap on eBay.

So, basically, I'm not able to stand in long lines without pain flareup. A product soon to be devalued to less than $5 isn't worth the time in line to me. So "Free"? That really isn't at attractive lure to me if it costs a major pain spike and waiting in line. For those willing to wait in line, I think it's fair enough. All ladies of luxury should stop by the line, open their purse, and let each one in line take a luxury product. Here sweetie, new lipgloss for you. But you have to promise to enjoy it for it is a product of beauty and frivolity, not a product of sensible necessity.

We got to pick our product, though it was from a list. Did you have make up at the store you went to, because we didn't, except for mascara. It was basically lotions and moistuizers.

Yeah it's lotions and you got a choice between 2 and the line was lasting over 2 hours. I decided against.

I saw the same thing, and I didn't even do it. Irritated me truthfully. For a person like myself who actually does spend money at those places I feel ripped-off. (the moistureizer I have to use, I can only get it there...and yes, I literally mean the only one I can and have to use...ugh)

So yeah. I didn't do it either. And all I saw were people who don't shop in those stores in the first place.

Greed is kind of gross. It reminded me of communism. While gluttony and elitism is disgusting too, so is the desperation of this crowd. The contrast is freaky.

Totally agree...the desperation was pretty obvious.
Me, I was hoping to get a Lovely bath gel, as mine ran out a while back. And it was a gift, so well, I Wasn't going to pay to replace it ;) But there were HUNDREDS of women I'd prefer not to pass on a street, let alone stand next to in a line!

I may have my nose in the air on occasion, but this was just wrong. I have to spend $60 on a moistureizer I Can't get anywhere else because of a skin condition, and so I think I deserve a little something. (especially since I have no choice other than to enrage the skin gods) But that was just insane.

You'll be able to now buy it super cheap on eBay though for far less than $60. Just keep and eye out. They will be going cheap.

It just kind of proves the point that there isn't such a thing as a free lunch.
The idea of waiting in a giant line for one product seemed a little Soviet for my taste.

I totally agreed! Very Soviet in a sad way since it isn't even bread or something needed.

My skin isn't THAT dry. ;)

I wait in line for things that are worth getting.
But I realized early on that I don't like to wait in line for most free things.

Well, being that we are in recession, maybe that's why so many were willing to wait in line. No job to go to?

My sister did it. She didn't have to wait in line and she got a free bottle of Jdor perfume. They have a list online of hat you can get. One of the things is Coco Madamoiselle lotion, another or L'oreal mascara, there's some good stuff.

You don't get to pick though at least at the Nordstrom I was at. You wait in line, then you get 1 of the 2 things they have.

Sadly I think that also ends up affecting people like me, who really do save up to buy something like perfume or a nice lipstick, and get to the makeup department only to be ignored. When Amy worked there I remember she told me she was careful to treat everyone equally, but I have always had a problem at Nordstrom getting anyone to pay attention to me. I went in with $80 hot in my pocket to get some advice about perfume, but after 20 minutes and counter-ladies helping people who'd arrived after me but were dressed a bit nicer, I just left.

I like Sephora for that reason. They help me no matter what I'm wearing and often it's a cute gay guy in eyeliner. They only do makeup and lotions and perfume, so it's fun.

Re: Ah, yes.

No worries! I got to see my friend and bring her a sparkly gloss which made her smile and took her mind off the pain, so it was a great night.

The free SkinTreats from Sephora are totally worth it though.

eBay farmers annoy me. No matter which section they aim for. :(

How do you get free skintreats? I'm talking about the lawsuit thing that they have all over da news where at Macy's and Nordstrom you wait in line to get a free product.

I know. I was trying to look on the bright side of waiting in line for makeup.

If you order anything online or buy a skin care product in the store, you get a sample pack of 10 skin care products. If you buy online the code is SKINTREATS

Nice! At least then you wait in your comfy home for the item and not in line.

True. The waiting sucks though... I want it NOW. I have two boxes on the way and I'm antsy.

I tried to get another sample pack to give you, but it says they're out. :-/ Maybe the stores have some left if you go Saturday.
