Oh my, that is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That would look awesome on you :) Turquoise would match your lovely red locks
I have the perfect vintage earrings to wear (they clip on as mine aren't peirced), but I can't afford this.
Well, they aren't, but apparently I want one to be?
THAT. IS. GORGEOUS.
It was just MADE for a redhead with an hourglass shape anyhow in my opinion. Now,...I just need more events to go to so I can justify it.
That is just a lovely dress.
I love just everything about it!
I think it's amazing. And it's such a classic style that I think you could wear it for years. I'd buy it.
Assuming I'm the same size for years. That's the issue.
I've never worn a dress in my life. But that, my friend? That is orgasmic.
I have very few chances to wear a dress like that, and in all honesty the price tag is out of budget, but it's something to aspire to I guess.
I think there are about three ways I look at a clothing purchase. I don't know if it will help or not, but, maybe!
Probably the most common is utilitarian, like I'll wear these jeans all time or this is appropriate for work so I'll wear it fairly regularly, and these are sort of wardrobe staples I have to have.
Another is cost-per-wear, which you seem to be thinking of a bit from what I'm reading. I know that you can never know for certain that your taste or size won't change drastically, but if it seems likely you'll get several wears out of it it can be a good deal despite the price. This would probably have been the way I looked at my Persian lamb coat if I had been the one to pay for it. It was pricey for my budget, but I intended to wear it a LOT, not save it for special occasions. The walk into my office from the parking lot in the winter is long and cold, so it is very appropriate.
Finally, there is the work-of-art category. This is one that not many things fall into, but it has happened occasionally. I have a hat, for instance, that I bought many years ago when I was a bit more flush. It is handmade, with vintage lace, and I paid... I think it was $45 for it. A lot of a hat, but it was a very special piece.
I'm thinking the dress might really fall into that last category. It is so special that it strikes me as a work of art. I'm not saying you should destroy your budget for it or anything, but if you feel you can afford a splurge I believe a work of art is worth splurging on. Especially if it makes you feel like royalty, as I'm guessing this dress might (I'm supposing I'm not the only one who feels like that when I put on something special.)
Anyway, that's just food for thought. Take it or leave, as you will. :o)
Ok, I have thought more on WHY I love this dress. The number on reason is I want to recreate the bust and sleeves. I can get a strapless dress similar altered with sleeves like this added at 1/4 the cost similar to this. It isn't THAT hard or THAT expensive. I just need to find a flattering and beautiful strapless gown, perhaps even 2nd hand. Now that I am a small size, plenty of prom dresses of a similar style end up 2nd hand.
So, I take any well made "goddess" style gown that is strapless, find beautiful draping fabric that goes, and properly drape me some sleeves, and THERE I have it. Maybe not the same exact look, but I'm not out my entire grocery budget for the month either
Now,..if I could RENT this dress for a night I'd pay up to $100 just to rent it.
I have one other thought on the matter. Since I now have basically NO tummy, I do not even need a dress with such a flattering ease on the bottom. That means so long as I love the top as much as this one, I could even get a simple sheath with draping on the bust, and add one of my custom corsets (underbust) or some embellishments from the craft store around the waist and arms and have a look a love nearly as much for less money and still feel great at the party.
I can't spend a total of $500 (including shoes, hose, hair) on ONE NIGHT unless it's my own freaking wedding. I just can't afford that. If I was healthy (please God), once every 5 years I could afford a splurge like this, but until then, dreaming about it here will suffice to cheer me up and come up with a brilliant and money saving alternative.
Your comment helped me more than any other. I really can't buy this dress, but I know more now what to do to get close enough to it.

The dress is stunning, but $400? Yeowch! I think your idea of adding to a 2nd hand prom dress is a good one. I know you're more frugal than to spend $400 on a dress, especially if it's one that won't be worn that frequently.
It isn't just a matter of frugal, I really don't have the money, but I think this STYLE is what I should be looking for. I'm a size 8 or 10 in a prom dress because they run small even though I wear a 4 or 6 in other clothes. Maybe if I feel good enough you might go Rossing with me soon? Maybe there is a dress I could alter and add sleeves to? I can feel like a princess without giving away the royal bank? :)
Sounds like fun. I have a dress I want to return as it was the best dress I tried on but when I got home I decided I just wouldn't wear it and will have to hold out for a better dress.
I have some time on Saturday! Do you? I am still in "The Boot", so it wouldn't be for long. I also have a return to make at Sephora, and now they have one in South Center, but I don't know about Federal Way. Maybe you could meet me in Kent and I could drive from there?
On Saturday I'm going to have a manicure/pedicure with Ellen for our birthdays at 11:30 and at night going to karaoke with Kelley. I'm free for a bit in the middle?
The middle is perfect! I can rest some, then we'll hang out. :)
I'll call you after the mani/pedi and get a time and place to meet.
OMG!! *die die die* LOVE IT. I dno't know that I'd have the willpower!!
I'm currently trying (but failing) to justify it.
Ohhh Honey you NEED that dress and the Dress Needs you!!! if you don't buy it I might have to start an internet campaign to raise the funds to buy it for you...IT IS AWESOME!
sadly I am too old and too modest to have that sort of internet following. ;) I love this dress. I'm going to seek alternative though. The price point just isn't realistic.
