Living Outside the Comfort Zone [Oct. 17th, 2007|09:44 am]

[Current Mood |cheerfulcheerful]

Yesterday was strange, but the good kind of strange.

At lunch I just had this crazy urge come over me. I took my soup in the cafeteria and approached two strange guys and asked, "Is it ok if I sit with you guys?" I had that sinking feeling like I was in High School and they were going to say, "No, NERD! Go away." Well, they didn't, and I ended up meeting some new people who work in Sales. I can't explain why I do things like this sometimes, but I guess I want to challenge myself to try new things, meet new people, and just be friendly. I hope I'm not annoying others, but they seemed ok with it.

Then as my boss is in town we went to dinner at a Moroccan eatery, Marrakesh. I've never tried that kind of food before. I fell in love with the prune chicken. So freaking good! It was a blast. I tried the imported wine (not a big fan,..really, I'll go with Australian reds any day, sorry Morocco).

I was shocked to find that I do sometimes have balls. :) It was really both scary and exciting. I think I'll have to try to put myself out there for rejection more often. If I keep doing it, I might get less crushed when it does happen, or it will matter less.

Cool! I am planning to go to Isla Mujeres with my Mom over her break (she is a teacher), but hopefully the dates are different. Let me know when it will be. That sounds fun.

Wow! My birthday is March 12th. We should be back in town by then.

I've kinda always done stuff like that. But then, I'm VERY extroverted in a lot of ways.
Though admittedly I never do it with meals...dunno why. *shrug*

Good for you chicky!!!

It's different to share a meal with someone. I think it's a natural bonding thing from the caveman days.

Yup. Definitely balls. I talk to people in the elevator and hallways, but I've never invited myself to sit with someone at lunch (in fact, I usually trudge my lunch back up to my desk...) Maybe I should take some pointers from you and just put myself out there. The worst they can say is "no" and then I'm still not eating lunch with them, just like now. :)

On second thought...

the idea of doing that makes me sick to my stomach. :) So ... maybe not. LOL!

That whole social anxiety/fear of judgement thing I guess.

Re: On second thought...

I'm telling you, when I asked I started to panic, but it was really good. Once you do it a few times that fear will get better.

They were really nice about it, and seemed to think it was fun meeting a new person. I don't think they knew that our team even existed, even though they sell the products we release.

I'm proud of you for going outside of your comfort zone! I think you chose a good place--work--to start doing things like that. You knew it was a safe place with people who answer to the same company you answer to.

I also figured it would be less weird at work because they had less chance of thinking I was trying to hit on them or had some ulterior motive. It was fun!
